Having just completed our third “morning fang”, or early morning run with the Turbo Register this past Sunday 16th July, I thought it timely to inform those of us who have not yet partaken, just what the runs have entailed.
As per the standing arrangement we met at 7.00am for our departure at 7.15am on the third Sunday morning of the month from PCM to a destination arranged by our Register Captain, Graham Lachlan. The destination today, Warburton! But hang on with Graham you know it wont be boring! We never take the direct route; utilising Graham’s detailed knowledge of the near north east roads he has always managed a very interesting somewhat challenging alternative route that provides many opportunities for Italian tune-ups and driving fun! About an hour later we arrive in down town Warburton, and yes, you guessed it – there’s more, time for a quick break, and then off to the Mt. Dona Buang summit. Graham is competing in the Mt Bulla Sprint later this year, so I think this may have been some practise. Suffice to say he left, and we met him at the top! But what a truly excellent drive, especially on an early damp Sunday morning.
Then it was time for our traditional Sunday brunch, so back to down town Warburton. Warburton is a bit sleepy on a Sunday morning, and Graham knowing of another exciting route to Healesville suggested that Healesville would also provide better food opportunities. In reality I think Graham simply wanted to travel via Paton’s Gap just for the hell of it! But in truth he had “Breakfast @ Harvest” in mind, a café attached to the Healesville Pub, where eggs benedict, french toast, poached free range eggs, donuts, muffins, and pastries, compote of winter fruits, and the best coffee in the hills awaited. Good company, good conversation, and excellent fun are the order of the day for these informal mornings.
Soon it was time to leave and attend to other Sunday family activities. For the statistically minded, for me it was a 245 kilometre round trip from Beaumaris, travelling at an overall average speed of 80 kph, using 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres of fuel, and home by 11.45am. Plenty of time to wash the car, and complete Sunday’s day of restoration.
Our other runs have been to Toolangi via Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek, completing loops of a mountain road returning to Healesville alternating via Chum Creek and the Mt St Leonard road, before continuing on to Yering Station for brunch; and to Kinglake via Mernda and Whittlesea, returning via St Andrews and Hurstbridge.
